Broward Criminal Defense Attorneys Note Increased Crime in Broward County

Broward County, Florida – According to the South Florda Sun-Sentinel, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) released crime statistics for the first half of 2008 on Tuesday. These figures show an a 2 percent drop in violent crime statewide; however, that statistic rose 3 percent overall in Broward County. Fort Lauderdale Criminal Attorneys have also noted an increase in such activity.

Reports of forcible rape increased 15 percent and robberies increased 11 percent, according to the FDLE’s report. However, homicides decreased in the first half of this year, going from 58 during that period last year to 38 this year. Auto thefts decreased by about 7 percent.

Law enforcement officials for Broward County say offenders are becoming more brazen and less concerned about police intervention. They also cited the current economy climate as a possible cause. Another potential explanation for the statistics is that more victims of violent crimes are reporting the incident, especially rape.

An associated professor of criminology at Florida Atlantic University assured readers that these stats were not cause for alarm. “To normal people, it means nothing.”
